Raw Talent interns 2018 web

Five Harrow College students who embarked on an employability academy run by Apprentice Winner Lee McQueen have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication with a paid internship.

The five students have just completed a six month, extra-curricular employability academy run by Raw Talent in partnership with Harrow College. The academy saw students complete the 8-stage course covering topics including; Business planning, self-motivation, communication and relationships building. The group also benefited from gaining an insight into commercial business workings, which included a visit to Capita’s London Office. The successful students (pictured left to right with Lee McQueen far right) are: Venelina Urlachka (19), Valeria Bedoya Garcia (16), Rebeca Costa (19), Paula Nabulya (17) and Zachariah Soliman (17).

Earlier in the college year hundreds of students applied and were interviewed to secure a place on the course, all receiving detailed feedback from Raw Talent’s expert recruiters.

Raw Talent Academy founder Lee McQueen, who worked for Lord Sugar for two years after winning the Apprentice said; “I am so passionate about the work Raw Talent does with Harrow College and it’s students because it means we are giving students a head start in their future careers. To be able to create such a great partnership with the College proves how committed they are to their students. This year again saw exceptional talent from the students throughout our whole process and I’m looking forward to see them again completing their internships”.

Lee Janaway, Head of Learner Services, Experience & Employability at Harrow College added; “These students have all developed new skills and attributes for future employment during their time on the academy programme and I am certain that they will use this to be successful in the future.”

The final task for group was to do a presentation in from of Lee McQueen and Lee Janaway describing their Raw Talent experience and what they have learnt from the process. The paid internships will be with Lee McQueen’s Raw Talent Academy as well as Capita who hosted the group during part of the academy process.

Learning Links cricket April 2018

Learning Links students have taken part in a Cricket Engagement Day at Lords Cricket Ground - the home of Cricket in the UK.

They sat in the members enclosure to watch a ladies match between Marylebone Maidens and Lords Ladies. They also got the chance to play a game in the indoor practice pitch where they received expert coaching from MCC coaches.

The student group had their photo taken (above) in the Memorial Gardens in front of the 2017 Ladies World Cup that the England Ladies won in a nail biting final last year.

Debbie Cusack, Lecturer for Foundation and Supported Learning at Harrow College said:

"For several years our students have been having weekly cricket coaching sessions with coaches from Middlesex Country Cricket, at Harrow Leisure Centre, through our partnership with the Lords Taverners Disability Cricket Association. During these sessions the students learn bowling, fielding, batting and teamwork skills. Staff have remarked how the students improve their hand to eye coordination skills as well as all the essential skills needed to play a game of cricket, and it improves their understanding of the game when being spectators".

Study tips to help you ace your exams

Scheduling regular study time for each subject is the best way to prepare for end-of-year exams. Here are a few of our best tips to help you prepare for your exams.

Work together / study groups

A benefit of having a study group is that it offers the opportunity to revise by helping others; explaining a concept to others reinforces the information in you.

Another benefit is the perspectives of others who may see things that you miss.

Flashcards

Another useful tip is to create flashcards.

Remember, part of the magic of flashcards is that they can be used to break down concepts into small bits of information. Use them for definitions, formulas, and anything that you must simply memorise.

Prepare, don't cram!

Cramming (long hours of study just before an exam) has been linked to lower retention of the material studied and lower test results compared to students who studied for less time but over a longer period.

The best test-taking strategies involve preparing well in advance, keeping a regular study schedule, and giving yourself enough time to revise properly before the actual exams.

The night before

In general, there are a few things that will help you move through exams smoothly - sleep well the night before, eat a light healthy breakfast, and arrive at the exam in good time.

Don’t panic on the day

When faced with a difficult question, take a deep breath and try not to panic. Clarity of thought will help to save the day. Also where possible, show every step of your working out!

Talk to others

Finally, talking to others who have already taken the exam can help boost your confidence. Ultimately, performance on the day is as much about preparation as it is about a positive mental framework. You can do this; others have done it and lived to tell the tale; you will too. Good luck.

 exam-tips

Take a few simple steps to help you with your exam preparation. Here are some suggestions which have proved to be a success with students in the past!

Plan…
Make a realistic revision schedule. Work out how much you have to do & the time you have to do it in, then break it down into manageable chunks. Aim to do a few hours of revision each day, and mix up your subjects so you don't get bored.

Relax...
Taking regular short breaks while you're working may help to reduce stress. A break every 45 to 60 minutes is about right. Taking your mind off your work will help you come back to it feeling refreshed. Try a relaxation routine…for example, close your eyes and breathe slowly and deeply. Breathe out more slowly than you breathe in.

Eat right…
Treat yourself to fresh fruit and vegetables and have a proper breakfast. Fuel your brain as well as your body - no one can think straight on coffee and chocolate alone.

Hydrate…
Stay hydrated - drinking lots of water, low-calorie sodas or herbal teas is key to feeling alert. Juices or sugary drinks can make you feel jittery and mess up your energy levels. Caffeinated tea and coffee perk you up, but they can all leave you craving more and, in excess, will either slow or bring you down, or over-stimulate you

Sleep well….
Wind down before bed and don't revise under the duvet - your bed is a sanctuary, not a desk. Try to get your eight hours.

Exercise….
Take time for physical activity. Regular and frequent exercise is a good stress reducer; helping to relive the physical tension and release those feel-good brain chemicals called endorphins.

Laugh...
Research shows that not only does laughter improve our mood; it also relieves stress and improves our immune system.

Reward yourself…
Try to make time for yourself away from your studies to wind down e.g. going running and shutting out the world for a while.
Take time for your mind and body to relax. Chatting with friends, meditation, or just watching a bit of telly can take the edge off.
Everyone needs time off. Do not abandon your social life altogether but for a period near the examinations, you may need to cut down. It's important to keep in mind that some sacrifices may be valuable in achieving what you want to get from the course.

Breathe...
Panic is often triggered by hyperventilating (quick, shallow breaths). So if you feel yourself losing it during the exam, sit back for a moment and control your breathing. Deep breath in and out through the nose, counting to five each way.

Learn to recognise when you're stressing out...
A break or a chat with someone who knows the pressure you're under will help to get things into perspective.

Talk…
If you're feeling stressed, it's important to talk to someone you trust, such as a family member, teacher or a friend. Many people find exams difficult to deal with, so don't be embarrassed to ask for support. Our Careers team are also always on hand to offer support.

The project, funded by HEFCE Catalyst fund, has been developed in response to our students’ requests for a greater use of technology to improve their learning opportunities and achievements. It is in line with Harrow College strategy to maximise student engagement in order to inform our processes, which in turn enhance students’ experience and therefore improve success rates and learning opportunities and outcomes.

The project aims to develop a desktop and mobile phone application (the app) that allows our HE students to stretch & challenge their learning, to engage with their studies outside of class and to open up new avenues for richer learning, real-time feedback and catch-up activity. The anticipated benefits to students are:

1. Enhanced student autonomy
 Individuals will be able to access their progress records, timetables, news, updates on scholarly activities and all information related to their student life from one platform and at times suitable to them.
 Opportunity to liaise with peers rather than relying on tutors for answers to specific questions, via forums and discussion groups.
 Ability to plan their own learning.

2. Improved learning outcomes:
 Students will be able to provide structured and ad-hoc feedback to inform course design and the college’s operational process, with the view to enhance students’ learning opportunities, all outside of class times.
 Readily accessible information regarding assessment, attendance and progress will serve as an additional success motivaton.

3. Work experience:
 The app designer will work with students via focus groups, discussions and their project work, in order to develop an application that is practical, user-friendly and beneficial to all students and staff, regardless of their preferred device.
 Employers with access will have a greater insight and more transparent methods of communication with learners where appropriate.

Project update (July 2017):

The App designer has been working with the College students and staff, the App has been designed and it will be ready to pilot from September 2017. A big thank you to the students who have volunteered to become members of our pilot group and who will provide the feedback necessary to improve and finalise the App design.

Final project update (May 2018):

Jack Petchey 2018

Four Harrow College students were honoured with a Jack Petchey achievement award for their outstanding work and efforts during the academic year. The scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables youth organisations like Harrow College to celebrate the achievements of their young people.

The awards were presented by the Deputy Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Kairul Kareema Marikar, at the Watersmeet Theatre in Rickmansworth on Tuesday 6th February 2018.

As well as their awards, each student winner also received a grant of £250 which has been used for the benefit of a group.

The Jack Petchey Foundation was launched in 1999 by Jack Petchey CBE, himself an East End entrepreneur. On their website, a quote from Jack Petchey regarding his awards programme reads "We do it because we want to help young people raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to their society".

Congratulations to all the winners! Below are the details of their achievements:

1. Eduard Manghar
Eduard was recently admitted to hospital to undergo surgery. He informed the college before he went and ensured all his work was handed in on time. He even asked for extra work so that he didn't fall behind. After a month, he returned and was as enthusiastic as ever, even asking if other students need support. Eduard never lets his disability get in the way of what he want to do. He chose to spend the award on headphones and tablets for the department.

2. Troy Collins
Troy is a special needs student who has been in college for the past 3 years on the Work Preparation course. He has been a real asset running a snack bar in the canteen with the college caterers. He has been trained to work in the canteen selling food to staff and students and has passed his food hygiene certificate which he did online. He has now been offered paid employment with the college caterers. His award enabled students from his class go on a trip to Hounslow Urban Farm and Megajump Trampoline Park.

3. Romica-Victor Badulescu
Romica is an exemplary student and is part of the Learner Voice committee and Student Union which involved meeting with the Principal and representing the views of the college. He is also part of the Enterprise Society where his team raised a substantial amount for the charity Sufra NW London and he also volunteered for the charity which is a food bank striving to stop hunger in the community. Romica was able to purchase 14 professional headphones for use by the department.

4. Brendan Chivasa
Brendan has cerebral palsy and wishes to spread awareness and support for those with the same condition in Africa. He has recently set up his own charity where has started to contact businesses who have old equipment such as wheelchairs, walking sticks and walking frames to see if they will donate them. He is at the early stage in his venture and is inspirational. Brendan chose Amazon vouchers which was used to purchase equipment for the department.

Bank of America Meryl Lynch visit May 2018 web

Business and Economics students from Harrow College have visited Bank of America Merrill Lynch - one of the world’s largest banking groups.

As well as getting a valuable insight into the world of work and what it entails, the students also left with a much better understanding of what an international bank does and the career opportunities available.

‘Inspiring the Future’ is a charity which helps to bring employers and educational establishments together. Their biggest sponsor is Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the massive prestigious American finance power house. Inspiring the Future invited Harrow College students to the Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s offices, in the shadow of St Paul’s Cathedral, to see what they do.

The day began with the students enjoying a fun trading game. The aim of the game was to trade various commodities across the room. The students had a lot of fun playing the game which got them thinking about the sort of things the bank does in just one of its many departments.

Next the students got to meet employees from various departments in a speed-date style quick fire question and answer session. Students sat at tables in small groups. They were joined by various employees from the many departments of the bank including the trading departments, IT, procurement and syndicated loans to name but a few. This particular format of meeting was perfect for meeting as many different employees as possible. The students had the opportunity to ask many questions as they could in 5 minutes before the employees moved to a different table where the process was repeated. Many questions were asked and answered during this insightful session.

The visit was a great success and the students enjoyed a wonderful experience.

Harrow College receives gold award for reading challenge

Reading

Harrow College has successfully completed a national reading initiative called ‘Reading Ahead’ which encourages students to engage in more reading.

Reading Ahead is a national programme run by The Reading Agency which challenges everyone over the age of 16 to choose six reads of anything they choose – newspapers, poems, plays, websites, books and more. Upon completion, the reader should then submit a review and rate each item with the added incentive of the chance to enter a prize draw when 6 items have been completed.

The scheme was embedded into tutorial classes at Harrow College meaning staff played an active role in promoting the scheme and encouraging their students to get involved. Science students showed a particularly keen interest with seven different courses within this subject area alone taking part, ranging from Entry Level 1 through to Higher Education Level 4.

Student and staff feedback has been very positive with the scheme significantly helping students with their reading and writing skills – a timely benefit with student exams currently taking place.

Chris Evans, Student Progression Advisor at Harrow College, has been spearheading the programme internally. He said:

‘The Reading Ahead challenge has been an astounding success this year! Harrow College will receive the Reading Agency’s Gold Award, with a record 200+ learners, spanning across 4 academic levels taking part.’

The programme took place nationally this year in public libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons across the UK and has reached 58,000 people so far.

Business HNC visit to Business Show Excel May 2018 - web

HNC Business students from Harrow College have visited the prestigious London Business Show held at the Excel London (16 May 2018).

The students took full advantage of the event taking every opportunity to attend talks and seminars led by leading entrepreneurs. Many of the topics were relevant to the business units studied by the students at Harrow College including Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and Managing a Successful Business Project.

The students were particularly impressed by the keynote speakers including Priya Chauhan, Google Digital Specialised Trainer, who gave a very informative and motivating talk entitled ‘Building a Digital Marketing Plan’. They also met Steven Smith – founder of the successful Poundland store. He had been ridiculed by family and friends when he initially shared his idea but remained focused and now runs a very successful business. A talk from Tommy Fordman (star of the TV show TOWIE) entitled ‘From Nothing to Something’ was also very inspirational. Tommy outlined his humble beginnings and the challenges he faced in setting up his business. Sheer determination and hard work enabled him to rise above the challenges of poverty and competition – Tommy now owns and runs his own successful shoe brand enterprise named Mallet Footwear.

Reflecting on the event, the Harrow College students agreed that the show had raised their awareness of the many opportunities and support services which exist for budding entrepreneurs. A key theme of the day was based around hard work and being passionate about your ideas and aspirations – something the students will take back to Harrow College when completing their HNC course.

Speaking after the event, Lorraine Adepoju, Business Lecturer at Harrow College said:

“I was very impressed by the high level of professionalism evident at the Business Show this year and pleased that the students engaged so well with the talks and activities and were not afraid to approach the speakers to ask questions to enhance their learning and understanding. I am very confident that this exposure to such a high profile business environment will be greatly beneficial and reflected in the quality of written assignments submitted by our students this year”.

Construction students from Harrow College have been busy putting their new skills and knowledge into practice by supporting a local community group.

The Level 1 construction learners have been supporting the ‘Friends of Pinner Village Gardens’ group to improve their local park. Learners from the Skills Centre – one of Harrow College’s specialist construction campuses - have built park benches in their purpose built campus workshops which were then installed into the parks children's playground area.

Speaking about the project, Dean Lahaye, Curriculum Manager for Construction and Engineering at Harrow College said:

“Our students were really keen to get involved in this community project and have demonstrated great skill and professionalism to deliver these park benches which have received great feedback from local Pinner residents. The plan is that this will be an ongoing partnership with more benches being built and installed later in the year.

"Studying at Harrow College was a great experience. Tutors and facilities inside the new Health & Social Care building were really nice. I’m really happy with my grades and now look forward to going to Buckinghamshire University to do a Children’s Nursing degree. My career goal is to be a children nurse."
