Harrow and Uxbridge Colleges proposed merger

$
0
0

Harrow College and Uxbridge College have announced their intention to merge in order to create a single, larger and more sustainable college, that is better able to meet current and future local needs. Both colleges will retain their existing campuses, names and identities.

The merger will create a significant educational provider in west London, supporting the success of around 12,500 students and apprentices, with over 600 staff and a combined turnover of around £50million. Both colleges see the merger as a ‘partnership of equals’ and both bring strengths and assets to the partnership. The new college will build on the educational character and values of both colleges, with a firm, stated commitment to maintain a substantial provision in each borough.

“Our merged organisation will give us greater resilience and greater scope to invest and increase our capacity to innovate and to respond effectively to regional and local needs.”

Nick Davies

Chair of Governors, Harrow College

Steve Cochran

Chair of Governors, Uxbridge College

The new Board of Governors will be made up of governors from the two existing colleges and the governance structure of the new college will take on a new group name, reflecting the joining of the two colleges.

The intention is to develop a strengthened provision of further education in both boroughs and beyond, for the benefit of students, staff and the wider community. The merger will increase opportunities for student progression, for developing existing and new specialisms, and for sharing best practice between staff to expand high quality education.

This merger proposal follows a detailed exercise of ‘due diligence’, carried out by an independent body, which has informed this ‘partnership of equals’.

On 1st March 2017 Learning Links / Life Skills and LLDD students (learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities) enjoyed a morning with visitors from Headstone Manor Museum as part of their work on the Whitefriars Glass project.

Whitefriars Glass at Harrow CollegeLaura Coughlin and Hailey Baxter of Headstone Manor Museum visited students at the new Spring House building to begin the morning with a presentation to students. Students were then moved into smaller groups to learn more about the glass, how to identify Whitefriars glass and knowledge of the production process that previously existed at Whitefriars.

Whitefriars Glass at Harrow CollegeStudents also had an opportunity to share their creativity by colouring in printed designs of Whitefriars glass.

Laura Coughlin, Access and Learning Officer at Headstone Manor Museum said “We've worked with Harrow College before and found the teaching staff and students to be a real pleasure to work with. Staff go the extra mile to help students to produce high quality output and they really understand the value of students interacting with art. As a local college it's important that students are able to learn about a history that's relevant to them. As a result of the project, they can really take a sense of pride in their involvement."

Pieces of Whitefriars Glass and a film will be exhibited at the museum from late 2017.

Students presenting

Harrow College, Level 2 Diploma in Business students were challenged to shed their ‘student approach’ and focus on preparing themselves for the real world. This was part of the Employer Challenge event with Business Volunteers from Buckingham Futures- a privately owned company which specialises in the recruitment of Environmental Health and Health & Safety professionals nationwide.

Students were divided into groups and asked to make a presentation on Interview preparation, technique and etiquette. Over 50 students put their minds together and came up with a variety of ideas on the said topic. Some groups presented their concepts with videos on what not to do in an interview, others were more straightforward with the dos and don’ts and some performed role plays as part their presentations.

Students presenting at Employer challenge event

Each presentation was followed with detailed feedback offered by business volunteers, Ketan Dattani, Barry Gilbert, Diana Carter and Katie Thomas regarding the content of the presentations and the students’ presentation skills. They also provided an insight into the interviewing process, tips and techniques.

Mohammed Benyahia, level 2 student said, “Working on these presentations has boosted my confidence in presenting to an audience and I’ve learnt more about how to give a good interview in the process”.

Another student, Mauro Lopes said, “Working with employers helps us to learn from their experience and gives us an insight into how the industry works. These presentations help in boosting our confidence and becoming better team workers.”

Employability Academy provides students with unique insight

Raw Talent students visit Capita offices Feb 2017

A group of career driven students from Harrow College have continued on their journey of discovery with the Raw Talent Employability Academy. As part of their programme of activities spread across the academic year, the group visited the head offices of Capita IT Resourcing to gain a unique first-hand insight into the word of work.

Raw Talent's Employability Academy aims to give students an understanding of business through a hands-on programme, extracurricular to the students College studies. Activities include giving the selected learners the opportunity to visit a large corporation, visit the different areas of a live business environment and receive coaching from business experts on specific employability skills.

During their most recent outing, the group were taken to Capita head office based in Maidenhead. For many, this was their first visit to a major corporate organisation. Dressed in their smart suits and with notebooks in hand, the student met various directors, team leaders and recruiters from Capita, Network Rail, Ministry of Defense and other government bodies. They listened intently as the speakers shared their career stories and offered advice.

The group later moved on to the offices of Raw Talent themselves, based in Oxford. They met staff members from sales, recruitment, marketing, operations, finance and HR and discovered how different a big corporate like Capita is compared to a small business like Raw Talent.

Students have now completed 6 of 8 days of the employability academy. The remaining days activities include ‘Beat the Boardroom’ (a BBC Apprentice style day where two teams go head-to-head) and also presenting details of their personal development through the Raw Talent process.

Raw Talent Employability Academy is the brainchild of BBC Apprentice Winner, Lee McQueen. Lee has successfully been working with Harrow College for over 5 years as his academy grows from strength to strength. Lee commented:

“It is incredible to see the difference in the students as the Employability Academy progresses. They have all grown in confidence, knowledge and self-motivation. The best part of running this programme with Harrow College is seeing the young students develop. I’m impressed by the life goals and plans they have now put in place and I’m looking forward to recognising their achievements at the end of the academic year”.

Later this month, the students will visit the new Civic Centre which has won multiple awards including the SCALA Civic Building of the Year award. The visit will comprise of a tour led by Aktar Choudhury, Operational Director for Regeneration in Brent. The visit will give students the opportunity to compare the current Civic Centre to that of the new state of the art building.

There are also plans in place for the students to meet Gort Scott Architects – the company who won the new Civic Centre architecture bid. Gort Scott Architects intend to visit Harrow College later in the year when they can meet students and exchange ideas on each other’s work.

Harrow College is pleased to announce that they have passed all criteria and been fully approved by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) to deliver apprenticeships under the new apprenticeship levy.

This is quite an accolade for Harrow College as many organisations were not successful.

Taking effect from 6th April 2017 some employers will be required to contribute 0.5% of their pay bill to a new apprenticeship levy.

The levy applies to all employers in any sector, with a pay bill of more than £3million each year. The College is now in a position to work with SMEs and large employers to offer bespoke consultancy alongside business planning and full training programmes in many areas.

Virginia Fossard, Associate Director of Employer Services and Employability at Harrow College says: “This is an excellent opportunity for Harrow College to highlight their expertise in this area and support not only SME’s, but large employers locally from the very outset of the new levy tax.”

The College’s apprenticeship team are able to assist employers with upskilling of current staff and making the best use of levy funding as soon as the tax is collected in April 2017. Guidance with recruitment programmes in the mid to long term is also possible to help grow business success and reduce staff costs.

Employers are now being encouraged to contact Harrow College’s apprenticeship team for advice and support with understanding the levy and to discuss apprentice recruitment opportunities. Contact Harrow College on 020 8909 6011 or email apprenticeships@harrow.ac.uk

Science students explore the wonders of Barcelona

Science Barcelona trip March 2017

Science students from Harrow College have visited Barcelona - one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe - to conduct field work and to explore the beautiful Spanish city.

Their field work commenced at the River Tordera. Here, the students focussed on five river beds where they calculated velocity and discharge levels. They also used this river study opportunity to assess flood risk, thus combining their efforts with hazard management fieldwork – another key component of their course curriculum.

Field work activity continued at the popular La Garrotxa Natural Park where students explored ecosystems and tectonic processes. The mountain landscape (a volcanic zone), the sun and climate at the park provide a variety of vegetation and exceptional value to the local landscape.

A trip to Barcelona would not be complete without some exploration of the city and its famous architecture. The students found time each day to visit a few of the many famous landmarks including the church of Sagrada Familia, Parc Güell public park, Casa Museu-Gaudí Gaudi museum, the Font Màgica fountain and a walk along La Rambla, Barcelona’s famous tree-lined avenue with its souvenirs stands, bird and flower sellers, mime artists and street entertainers.

Michael Worgs, Senior Curriculum Manager for Science & Sport at Harrow College said “this trip has really helped to broaden the students’ knowledge both academically and socially. Being able to apply knowledge from the classroom in a live environment is invaluable. Being able to do this is a fantastic city like Barcelona has provided the young learners with a fantastic life experience to remember”.

Careers Colleges Amazon trip 0317

Students from Harrow College’s Digital and Creative Career College are being given the opportunity to work on a live digital project – giving them hands on industry experience, while supporting a homelessness charity.

The pioneering project is being run with The Roberts Centre - a charity which provides support for homeless children and their families – together with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing division of Amazon.

45 technology students aged 16 and 17, comprising of students from Harrow College as well as BMet and Barking & Dagenham College, have been tasked with developing digital applications to support the launch of three new books produced by The Robert Centre.

The books, aimed at children between the ages of four and eight, will help to explain homelessness, debt and family break-up in a way that children can understand and relate to these issues.

The three colleges are all part of the national Career Colleges network, which focuses on providing employer-led curriculums for young people, preparing them for fulfilling careers in specific industries.

The Career Colleges Trust unveiled the project brief to the students at AWS’ offices in London last month (March 2017). During the day, students had the opporutnity to hear from Amazon employees and learn more about some of the latest cloud technologies available to build their applications.

The project will be managed and run in exactly the same way as a commercial new business brief. Students will have two update calls with the Project Board, focusing on design, finance, and the project plan. Both the Career Colleges Trust and AWS will sit on the project board.

Digital Lead for the Career Colleges Trust, Julia Von Klonowski, said:

“Not only will our students get a chance to use the digital skills they have been acquiring during their courses, but they’re getting first-hand experience of how a multinational company works. They are also getting insight to the huge number of career opportunities available within the growing digital sector”.

 Business Paris trip March 2017

Business and ICT students from Harrow College have enjoyed an end of term social trip to Paris. The young learners spent 4 days in the French capital to mark the end of the spring term and the start of the summer term. During the visit, students enjoyed the many sights that have made Paris one of the leading tourist destinations in Europe.

Their adventures started with a ferry trip across the Channel with Disneyland Paris the destination. After checking in to the Disneyland Paris Hotel village, the group enjoyed dinner before heading back to their rooms after a tiring day.

The next two days were spent at the Disneyland and Studio Park where the students (and staff) enjoyed the Disney parade, park rides, meeting Disney characters and lots of shopping.

On the final day, the group travelled into central Paris to soak in the Parisian atmosphere. They visited the Fragonard perfume factory and learnt about how perfumes are made as well as being given a tour of the shop and perfume museum. This was followed by a metro ride to Trocadero and a fantastic viewpoint of the Eiffel Tower. After spending some time at the gardens and fountains below the Tower, the group travelled to the Notre Dame Cathedral and finally some souvenir shopping in the Latin Quarter area along the River Seine.

Sultan Soukani, Senior Curriculum Manager for ICT & Business said “We aim to give our students opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. Visiting a major European city and experiencing a new culture has been very beneficial and the students have thoroughly embraced and enjoyed the occasion. We now look forward to the new term and a successful end to the academic year”.

CARBON-TRUST-LG

Harrow College is proud to announce that it has been re-certified by the Carbon Trust Standard for continued carbon reduction year on year.

Harrow College was one of the first general FE College to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard and in 2012 was shortlisted for a Times Educational Supplement FE award for Outstanding Practice in Sustainability.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, the college has achieved a 7.1% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2013 and gained an excellent carbon management score of 88% for 2016 - only 2% lower than the best organization in the sector.

The College is particularly pleased to have achieved a maximum 100% score in specific criteria including allocation of responsibility, carbon accounting, investment in energy saving and for engaging with students and the wider community.

Harrow College aims to continue its carbon footprint reduction. A key support to this vision will be an internal ‘Turn It Off’ campaign which encourages staff and students to turn off lights when leaving a room, reduce heating where possible, printing less and switching off computers and other appliances when not in use. Students will also be encouraged to value their environment by participating in events such as the Environment Week and Green Travel Days.

Maths student Rui Tao goes to Eaton July 2017

An AS Level student from Harrow College has been accepted into a highly regarded Summer School at the prestigious Eton College.

Rui Tao, 17, will attend the ten-day Summer School designed for pupils at the end of their first year of college and contemplating entry to University. Applicants should have the intention of going to a British university and be of the calibre of those applying for admission to Oxford or Cambridge.

As far as possible the course supplements normal school work and avoids the topics covered during A-level teaching. The aim is to provide an intensive and exciting programme to enrich the intellectual experience of those participating and to give them the opportunity to exchange ideas with able students with similar interests from other schools. Whilst at the Summer School, Rui will be studying a combined course of Chemistry and Maths, as well as a series of extra-curricular activities.

Parvaneh Alinaghian teaches Rui Maths AS level at Harrow College. She commented:

"This is an ideal course for Rui as she will be stretched intellectually. The opportunity to extend her studies by exploring topics outside the A-level syllabus will be of great benefit to her."

A delighted Rui, who is currently studying AS Levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology, has ambitions of doing a degree in Chemistry at Oxford University after she completes her course at Harrow College. Speaking about the Summer School which takes place from 4-14 July 2017, Rui said:

“I feel excited and a little nervous. This will be a challenge for me but also an experience I’m really looking forward too"

Rui is following in the footsteps of Viktoria Noel, a former Harrow College student, who attended the same course in 2015. Viktoria is now studying Physics at Oxford University.

IT Students inspired by rare visit to hospital department

STERIS web 1

A group of students with varying levels of social, communication and learning difficulties have enjoyed a rare opportunity to visit a hospital Sterile Services department based inside Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow.

The OCR Level 2 Extended Certificate in IT group consists of 10 students, focussing primarily on Game Design & Development and Animation units. A key aspect of their overall learning experience includes finding work in the IT industry and the development of communication, work and social skills.

STERIS Instrument Management Services (IMS) is the company who run the Sterile Services Department. Doros Polydorou, Business Development Director, introduced STERIS to the students and explained why the sterilisation of medical equipment is so critical to the day to day running of a hospital.

The students were then given a guided tour of the facilities and shown the integral part that IT plays as well as being shown the full cycle of how medical equipment is brought down to the department, how the items are cleaned and sterilised, re-packaged and dispatched back to hospital wards ready for use – all within 6 hours.

This unique experience proved to be a hit with the student. The tour fascinated the students with Doros and his team on hand throughout the day to provide a running commentary, demonstrate procedures, and answer the many questioned asked by the intrigued young learners.

For the students, the visit fulfilled a number of key criteria from their IT syllabus including the characteristics valued by employers in the IT industry. The research they conducted pre-visit followed by their post-visit presentation on their findings from the day will stand them in good stead for the remainder for the course.

One of the students from the group wrote a thank you letter to his lecturer, Stella Polydorou, for organising the trip where He described the trip as being one of the best he’d ever been to.

Career College AWS 030517 web

In March 2017, students from Harrow College’s Digital and Creative Career College were given the opportunity to work on a live digital project – giving them hands on industry experience, while supporting a homelessness charity.

Their task was to develop an interactive solution for three books produced by The Roberts Centre - a charity for the homeless. The books help children to relate to issues such as debt, family break-up and homelessness.

Over the past 8 weeks, students from Harrow College as well as BMet and Barking & Dagenham College, have been busy working to a brief which included making some key financial decisions based on a virtual £60k budget (e.g. employee costs, materials, expenses etc.).

On 3rd May at the offices of AWS (Amazon Web Services), the teenagers presented their project plans to representatives from AWS, The Roberts Centre and the organiser of the project, Career Colleges Trust.

The students had to deal with every day work issues including team absences, working together as a new group and supporting one another to fill knowledge gaps - quite something for 17 year olds!

Despite narrowly missing out on winning the top prize, the team from Harrow College were all able to confidently present their solutions and demonstrate their understanding of the brief.

Digital Lead for the Career Colleges Trust, Julia Von Klonowski, said:

“All the students did a fantastic job and I was hugely proud of them all. Taking part in a live project with one of the world’s biggest digital companies has been an amazing opportunity for them.
