Harrow College and Uxbridge College have announced their intention to merge in order to create a single, larger and more sustainable college, that is better able to meet current and future local needs. Both colleges will retain their existing campuses, names and identities.

The merger will create a significant educational provider in west London, supporting the success of around 12,500 students and apprentices, with over 600 staff and a combined turnover of around £50million. Both colleges see the merger as a ‘partnership of equals’ and both bring strengths and assets to the partnership. The new college will build on the educational character and values of both colleges, with a firm, stated commitment to maintain a substantial provision in each borough.

Harrow College would like to thnak respondents for their feedback to our recent public consultation on the proposed merger. The result of the consultation confirms that there is no reason for the merger not to proceed. Girls Network 2017 a web

A professional mentoring service for girls at Harrow College has proven to be a big success.

The Girls Network offers students access to professional female mentors who they see throughout the year.

There are thousands of girls in the Girls Network from colleges and schools around the UK. Once in the network, the girls can continue to contact female professionals even when they have finished studying as they progress into their own professions.

Following an introductory session by Nat Rossetti, Girls Network Programme Manager, 22 girls across multiple subject areas from Harrow College joined the programme. Each girl was then matched to a female mentor, carefully selected to match the interests and ambitions of the student.

Mentors have been engaging with their student mentees regularly, discussing a range of topics relating to their personal development and career ambitions including: how to present yourself, focusing on goals and how to overcome fear, support with coursework and gaining confidence with maths, interview preparation, university applications, exploring risk taking and the pros and cons of a gap year.

Highlights include:

  • An architect supporting a Level Three Architecture student has organised a week’s work experience for her mentee in her firm of architects.
  • A student studying theatrical make up has accompanied her mentor to several cat walk fashion events including Pure London Fashion Show where she has met high profile professional make-up artists.
  • One of our student’s mentors is a dentist who has offered free dental check-ups to all our girls on the programme.

Sabrin Abdullahi (see picture above, left) is one of the girls from the programme. She said:

“I have really enjoyed the Girl’s Network program. My mentor has encouraged me a lot. We’ve travelled to many places in London which has given me new life experiences. We’ve definitely built a lifelong relationship. Thank you Harrow College for making it possible”.

Career College ASW Cloud talk June 2017 web

IT students from Harrow College have been visited by a digital expert to learn about current trends impacting the IT industry. The focus of the session was Cloud technology, delivered by Head of Public Sector for Amazon Web Services, Chris Hayman.

Amazon have forged a number of close ties with Harrow College, resonating from the specialist Digital and Creative Career College which the college launched in 2015. This specialist career path combines curriculum studies with employability skills.

Cloud technology is an integral part of today’s IT industry. Gadgets such as smart phones, FitBits, smart watches, and the many applications which they support, generate huge amounts of data which is constantly being analysed. The Level 3 students learnt how Cloud technology allows for this data to be stored in real time allowing for seamless day to day usage (the Transport for London journey planner was a good example given to students of vast amounts of real time data using the Cloud).

Harrow College has benefited from a number of high profile industry visits throughout the year including representatives from Sony, Sky and IBM. These employer relationships are set to develop even further for the start of the new academic year in September with students having the opportunity to gain further career insight via initiatives such as employer talks, off-site visits and professional mentoring.

Speaking after the session, Digital Lead for the Career Colleges Trust, Julia Von Klonowski, said:

“Having one of the world’s biggest digital companies sharing their industry insight and knowledge is invaluable. We’re working on a number of new ideas with Harrow College which will bring students and leading employers even closer together. These programmes will be of great benefit to students and the careers paths they pursue”.

Architecture project Harrow College Art Design July 2017 web

Year 2 Architecture, Interior and Product Design students from Harrow College have proudly presented their design ideas ahead of the opening of the new Harrow Council Civic Centre in Wealdstone.

The students were invited to work with architects Gort Scott and Harrow Council’s regeneration department to explore how the new complex will represent and serve those who live and work in the borough.

The project focussed on 3 themes. Each theme had a different focus and students were able to personalise how they answered the set problems.

1 - Workspace: The students were given the option to design a multi-use, flexible work space that reflected the local area.
- Registry Office: As an alternative the students were given the option to design the interior of the council’s new registry office and Library.
3 - For the final option, students were asked to design a multi-use flexible interior for the civic centre’s new library.

Before the end of the project the students from Harrow College presented their ideas to the architects. The architects provided them with lots of helpful advice and helpful feedback.

The students work is currently on display in the Civic Centre for council staff to see how they approached the challenges of the new building. The projects will also be exhibited in the upcoming public consultation meetings in Wealdstone so the local community can see how the Harrow College students explored the forthcoming changes to the local area.

Harrow and Uxbridge Colleges will work together to provide the best opportunities to students while keeping their individual names and campuses. The Colleges are now officially part of the same organisation but will keep their current identities as well as continuing to run the majority of their current courses for the foreseeable future.

The merger of the two Colleges into a single legal entity has taken place in order to maximise future opportunities for students, employers and local communities, through a combination of preserving current provision, and pooling resources and expertise to develop education and training.

Group Principal and CEO Laraine Smith and Principal and Deputy CEO Pat Carvalho said:

“This exciting partnership was identified by both Harrow College and Uxbridge College’s governing bodies as the best way forward for our local communities. Both Colleges are very pleased to be able to both maintain their current identities and the bulk of their current courses, as well as to be enhancing provision on an ongoing basis by pooling resources and expertise. We believe this merger will result in a financially resilient and sustainable college group, allowing us to continue to meet the needs of our students, employers and the communities we serve.”

While Harrow College and Uxbridge College will continue to operate as individual Colleges serving their local and regional communities, the Uxbridge College Corporation (the Governing Body), which now oversees the running of both Colleges, has been renamed HCUC to reflect the enlarged remit of serving Harrow and Uxbridge Governors following the 1st August 2017 merger.

RTA 2017 web a

Harrow College students hoping to boost their career prospects have taken part in a competitive audition day (Thursday 19 October) run by Raw Talent Academy (RTA), the business founded by BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ winner Lee McQueen.

Over 200 students applied to gain a place on the RTA Employability Academy programme. Following a rigid interview and selection process, this was then reduced down to just 50 students, who were invited to the audition. Students were competing for one of only 20 final places.

During the day-long audition which took place at the college's Enterprise Centre at the Harrow on the Hill campus, students were put into four teams and rotated across specific employment related tasks which included a selling task – testing the students’ sales and negotiation skills; a marketing task – creating an advertising campaign for Harrow College; a recruitment task – challenging the students’ attention to detail and listening skills and a Dragons' Den style business pitch – looking at students’ business skills and creativity.

Raw Talent's Employability Academy aims to give students an insight into business through a hands-on programme, which is extracurricular to the students' College studies. Activities on the programme include giving the selected learners the opportunity to visit a large corporation, visit the different areas of a live business environment and receive coaching from business experts on specific employability skills. Students will also take part in 'The Apprentice' style tasks before presenting details of their personal development.

At the end of the audition day the final names were selected. The delighted successful students, who come from a number of curriculum areas within the college, can now look forward to a programme of activities spread out over the coming months.

Commenting on today's audition process, Lee McQueen said:

“This is our 6th year in partnership with Harrow College which I am extremely proud of and shows the College’s commitment to their students. The students have impressed me again, the talent and maturity the students show year on year makes the final decision hard every time. The class of 2017 is going to be excellent."

 Reading web

Harrow College has joined a national reading initiative called ‘Reading Ahead’ with the aim of encouraging students to do more reading.

The scheme has been embedded into tutorial classes at the college meaning staff can play an active role in promoting the scheme and encourage their students to get involved.

Reading Ahead is a national programme run by The Reading Agency which challenges everyone over the age of 16 to choose six reads of anything they choose – newspapers, poems, plays, websites, books and more. Upon completion, the reader should then submit a review and rate each item with the added incentive of the chance to enter a prize draw when 6 items have been completed.

The programme takes place every year in public libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons across the UK and reached 38,000 people in 2016/17. The Learning Centre at Harrow College has been running a reading challenge for the past few years having previously won a silver award.

Chris Evans, Student Progression Advisor at Harrow College, has been spearheading the programme internally. He said:

“This is about changing perceptions of reading, opening up opportunities and building student confidence. The programme has just started and already we have seen excellent interest from our students”.
