Colleges Week 2020

This week Colleges Week celebrates all the fantastic work done nationally by colleges all over the UK - including at Harrow College.

We will be sharing highlights of our great work across all our social media platforms under the #loveourcolleges and #collegesweek hashtags, reaching out to our MPs to lobby for a better deal for us from Government, and inviting students to join in special activities to mark the event.

Despite the many challenges of Covid-19 this year, Harrow College has continued to provide a high level of support for young people and adult learners alike, as well as to the businesses whose training needs we support, and to our local communities.

Highlights this year for at Harrow College have included:
* Supporting local communities during lockdown with donations and support including care packages, sweets and donations of PPE
* Staff and students supporting individuals in lockdown through the NHS Volunteer Responders programme
* Use of online learning tools during lockdown and beyond
* Supporting adult learners with free courses to help boost their careers and learning potential
* Working with 700 employers in 25 sectors to help them develop their workforce

Dr Darrell DeSouza Group Principal and CEO of HCUC, the merged college group for Harrow College and Uxbridge College, said: “Throughout the college year we make every effort to share our achievements and let all our communities know what we have to offer, and our supporters how they can help - but Colleges Week gives us a special opportunity to really shout about it. Personally I would like to say a huge thank you to all our staff and students this year for making our colleges such amazing places and for pulling together through such difficult times.”

Students have been invited to take part in the Colleges Week competition to produce creative work including art, songs and performances which celebrates our achievements.
We have also invited our MPs to support us by asking the Chancellor to provide colleges with the investment they need, signing an Early Day Motion (EDM), and supplying a video that can be shared with staff and students. As one of the first six members to sign, Bob Blackman for Harrow East was named a sponsor of the EDM 948 entitled ‘Support for Further Education Colleges’.

Colleges Week is led by the Association of Colleges, the membership, support and lobbying body for colleges across the UK.

AAT MOCKUP 3

Split your studies between online and on campus learning with new ‘blended learning’ courses at Harrow College.

Harrow College is offering new, flexible courses in bookkeeping, accountancy and management – with a mix of online and on campus learning.

The ‘blended learning’ courses, run in partnership with Mindful Education, offer increased access and flexibility for part-time students and apprentices in these areas. Learners can combine the benefits of online learning with being part of a class that meets regularly with a college tutor.

Online lessons can be accessed on mobile, tablet or desktop, meaning that students can choose how, when and where they want to study. Students and apprentices also attend regular classes with a college tutor, where their learning is supported and embedded through group work, discussion and 1:1 feedback. Students can study around work and life commitments and can re-visit online lessons when needed. Attendance at college is fortnightly, except for the management apprenticeships, where attendance is monthly.

Dr Darrell DeSouza Group Principal and CEO of HCUC said: “As well as offering superb flexibility, these award-winning courses have very good success rates. These new blended learning courses run in partnership between Harrow College and Mindful Education, offer increased flexibility by giving students and apprentices more opportunities to fit in their studies with other commitments and work, as well as providing all the necessary support where needed. Harrow College is very pleased to be able to have this new approach on offer as part of its ongoing commitment to responding to the needs of students and employers.

The increased flexibility helps to meet the demands of staying Covid-safe, as well as enabling apprentices to spend less time away from the workplace. Employers also benefit from the innovative online analytics which help to evidence the 20% off-the-job training requirement.

Online and On Campus courses and apprenticeships currently on offer:

  • AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping - 16 weeks, next starting date January 2021 (on campus classes at both Uxbridge College and Harrow College)

Architecture students at Pinner-min

Students from the Year 2 Level 3 Extended Diploma in Architecture, Interior & Product Design Course were tasked with an exciting brief for a live project from the William Heath Robinson Trust.800px Heath Robinson WWIIllustration by W. Heath Robinson

The project required them to design and create a piece of festive decoration based on the work of William Heath Robinson, a popular London cartoonist who lived in Pinner during WW1 and the interwar years. Robinson is best known for poking fun at the modern age's blind faith in machinery through his cartoons.

The name "Heath Robinson" became part of common parlance in the UK for comlex inventions that achieved absurdly simple results.

The students sculptural decorations are lit up and festively displayed on West House, the building adjacent to the Heath Robinson Museum. The project aims to build Computer aided design skills in a creative and practical way, keeping industry and client briefs in focus.

Harrow College Students reach the final of Fujitsu’s ‘Operation Innovation’ competition

IT Students, Amen Shauqat, Julia Member, Maxsimilian Amalathas and Rashdin Mohamed Akbar, from Harrow College successfully reached the finals of 'Operation Innovation', a competition run by international tech company Fujitsu as a way to provide crucial project based learning opportunities and tech industry contact for the next generation of bright young minds.

During the competition, Fujitsu supported teams of four students from their Education Ambassador Partner institutions to create a prototype idea for an inventive new technology solution. The finalists ultimately present this Proof of Concept “Dragon’s Den” style to an expert Fujitsu panel (through Microsoft Teams) – with one team being crowned the 2020 winner.

For 2020, Fujitsu challenged learners to tackle a problem in the increasingly hard-pressed Healthcare or Education sectors. These topics were selected in particular this year as human-centric innovation is an incredibly important part of Fujitsu’s Technology and Service Vision – it’s vital that we all use our collective expertise to tackle society’s biggest challenges. Students were to apply AI and robotics concepts as part of the challenge, taking inspiration from exciting recent use-cases.

As one of the finalist teams, Amen, Julia, Maxsimilian and Rashdin presented their idea in a Dragon's Den style 15-minute pitch to a panel of Fujitsu specialists.

The team had the following to say about their experience in the competition;

Amen Shauqat - "I have learned many skills whilst participating in the competition. I learned how to be more confident and due to this I think I will be able to do any other presentation in the future. Our effort and teamwork made it easy for each one of us. I am grateful that I was a part of this great project."

Julia Member - "The competition encouraged me to create and develop an idea which could be practical and implemented in real life. I feel grateful to have been part of it, helping me gain professional skills and improve my confidence with public speaking."

Maxsimilian Amalathas - "Regardless of the results I feel this wonderful and remarkable experience has encouraged me to be more professional and confident in myself and for future presentations. Our hard work and dedication during the Fujitsu project helped me to develop numerous skills. I feel that I gained and enhanced my team working skills and also some interpersonal skills, which will definitely help me in my future and especially at my workplace. I am proud of being one of the finalists of the Fujitsu 2020 AI Project and I definitely feel that this remarkable experience enhanced my skills and my thoughts."

Rashdin Mohamed Akbar - "I feel mesmerized by how many steps we took to make our project a successful presentation. I think that the presentation we gave will be shown internally across Fujitsu where they will use this idea to make our environment a safer place. The project was an encouraging and wonderful experience where we had time to help each other and to share ideas. It was hard in the beginning because everyone had different ideas, but then in the end the idea became successful. I feel happy for the hard steps we as a team have taken to complete this project even when we were busy with coursework and exam preperation. It is an excellent effort that has given me new skills and benefits that will help my future studies and career. I feel extremely thankful for being given this opportunity and I hope that our efforts will make us successess in our future studies and careers."

West London Institute of Technology (WLIoT) marked its first Anniversary with a Virtual Celebration event.

This event showcased and celebrated what WLIoT has achieved in its first year and beyond, including sharing plans for the future.
WLIoT is one of just 12 Institutes of Technology licenced by the UK Government to provide employer-led higher technical education and training at Levels 4 and 5 (equivalent to up to the first two years of an undergraduate degree). The IoT, which was supported with £8.6m Government funding, offers courses in Digital, Engineering and Construction subjects.
Highlights of the event included:

Presentations from:

  • Boris Johnson MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip and Prime Minister.
  • Gillian Keegan, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills.
  • Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, GLA.
  • Steve Cochran, Vice Chair for HCUC.
  • Dr Darrell DeSouza, Group Principal and CEO for HCUC; and Pat Carvalho Deputy CEO of HCUC and the development lead on WLIoT.
  • A Virtual Tour of the remodelled workshops, learning and breakout spaces.
  • First Year Highlights: Led by WLIoT Anchor Partners Brunel University London, Fujitsu, Heathrow and West London Business.
  • Student Awards: Announcing winners for employer-set mini-projects 2020 - Heathrow, MTC (Material Technology Centre) Ltd and Palo Alto Networks. Brunel University London PhD students were also involved in the supervision of mini projects.

Around 100 guests included employers, students and staff, and other stakeholders and supporters, attended the event.
Boris Johnson said: “Higher technical qualifications are more important than ever, with the impact of Covid 19 affecting individual jobs and businesses. I know West London IoT will continue to inspire individuals from all ages, genders and backgrounds to consider the opportunities and benefits of taking their studies higher."

Gillian Keegan, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills, said: “Congratulations to West London Institute of Technology for all that it has achieved in its first year. I know this will be the first of many years of success, helping students and employers get access to the high level skills they need to succeed. Institutes of Technology are the pinnacle of higher technical STEM education and training in many key sectors including digital, construction and engineering. By bringing together FE colleges and universities with employers, IoTs are uniquely placed to unlock home-grown talent, ensure learners are equipped with the skills of tomorrow, and play a key role in helping to rebuild the economy after the pandemic.”

Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, said: “The role of technical education is more important now than ever. IoTs delivering this will be key platforms to take the agenda forward, by enabling employers and higher education partners to be truly at the heart of shaping what FE can do for our local communities.”

Dr Darrell DeSouza, Group Principal and CEO of HCUC, said: “We are delighted to be celebrating a solid start to this exciting new facility at HCUC in the shape of West London Institute of Technology, and to have the support of our local MP Boris Johnson for this event as well as Gillian Keegan, Minister for Apprenticeships and Skills, and Jules Pipe, Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills at the GLA. Our first anniversary celebration is another great opportunity to find out more about the higher level opportunities in Technical training on offer to students across west London and to have a look at our wonderful new learning areas, albeit virtually.”

The celebration event came just days after publication of the Further Education Skills for Jobs White Paper, which outlines Government proposals to support people to develop the skills they need to get good jobs. The White Paper includes a range of measures already underpinned by the Institute of Technology agenda and WLIoT, with programme design being employer led to ensure the development of the right blend of work-ready and higher level technical skills, supported by outstanding teaching.

WLIoT, which was launched in September 2019, is led by the merged college group HCUC (Harrow College Uxbridge College) and run in collaboration with its anchor partners. Subject to Covid restrictions, on-site delivery is focussed in its remodelled workshops and learning space on Uxbridge College’s Park Road site in Uxbridge, with courses also being delivered in established professional skills workshops and classrooms on the campus. Courses are also run at Uxbridge College’s Hayes campus and at Harrow College, and will also be taught at Brunel University London campus from next year.

IoTs are aimed at tackling the skill gaps within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sector, and boosting opportunities for students, trainees and Apprentices to achieve the higher technical qualifications and industry skills demanded by employers.

New undergraduate-level bite-size courses launched at West London Institute of Technology

New ‘bite size’ courses taught at undergraduate-level are being launched at West London Institute of Technology (WLIoT).

The ‘HN Flex’ courses are individual units drawn from the full BTEC HNC courses which are also taught at WLIoT in Construction, Digital Technology, and Engineering subjects.

The first HN Flex course is a seven week Level 4 course taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with some Saturdays, starting May 4 with Construction Practice and Management.

The aim of this Flex unit is to develop and provide students with a holistic understanding of construction practice and management processes. Candidates will normally be in more senior roles and have achieved a qualification at Level 3 (A level or equivalent or above).

HN Flex units can help improve staff work efficiencies as well as being used to meet employer training requirements.

HNCs often lead on to HND qualifications, which in turn can lead to a final year ‘top up’ degree which is popular with students at this level.
The courses are currently being taught remotely by Uxbridge College and Harrow College, part of the merged college group HCUC which is the lead partner in WLIoT.

Planning for Success

plan 2

Examinations don't have to be daunting if you prepare for it, well in advance. We’ve put together the following tips to help you plan your studies ahead of exam season.

Make a Study Plan

Planning and organising your study is key. Students want to do well and study hard but many cannot because they don’t know how or where to begin. Planning is the first step. Make a plan including the topics you need to study and put it into a timetable. Mix up your subjects to avoid burnout. Take subjects you like, and dislike, into consideration. Make sure you set aside enough time for leisure and other commitments. And most importantly stick to the plan.

Set S.M.A.R.T study goals

Goals give you an endpoint to focus on. This could be a deadline for finishing a chapter, or attaining a certain score on a practise test, or simply studying for a set amount of time. Whatever it is, set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic & Timed) goals and don’t forget to reward yourself when you achieve these goals. Goals are a stepping stone to completing your studies in a structured way.

Choose a suitable location

Find a quiet, comfortable place to study. Make sure you have plenty of light and enough space for your books. Ensure the area is free from distractions like your phone, noise, pets etc… Keep your study and writing materials at hand before you begin your studies.

Keep fit & healthy

Eating a healthy diet is essential to help you focus and concentrate on your studies. Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids. Also make time for exercise and get outdoors between your studies if you can. It’s also important to get enough sleep at night. If you like studying late into the night or early in the morning, make sure you catch up on the sleep lost.

Take frequent breaks

Last but not the least. Take a break! Taking breaks is very important. Long periods of study without breaks, diminishes your focus and concentration. Breaks will help you pay more attention and helps to bring your mind back to focus on your studies. Breaks can also be a way to reward yourself for attaining a study goal. Such as spending break time on social media, talking to a friend, watching an episode of your favourite programme etc...

We hope, following the steps above will give you a good head start to preparing for your exams!

Strong A Level results at Harrow College in 2021 despite pandemic disruption

Harrow A Levels Group

Harrow College students are celebrating strong results in 2021 in spite of the challenges caused by the pandemic over the last 18 months.

A massive effort by students and staff, despite the many ongoing changes and uncertainties surrounding learning and assessment, has seen an impressive number achieving coveted quadruple and triple A* and A grades at A Level.

Robust teacher-assessed grades practices have produced a solid set of grades reflecting the consistent hard work of students, many of whom have produced excellent grades as well as showing tremendous personal improvements.

A total of 100% of Harrow College A Level students achieved A*-E grades, with 71% at high grades A*C. A In all 14 students took A Level exams, all studying the specialist Science A Level package biology, chemistry and maths.

Dr Darrell DeSouza, CEO of the merged college group HCUC, said: “I’d like to offer huge congratulations to all our students for how well they’ve done in what have been incredibly challenging times, as well as to our staff in teaching and supporting them.

“Our students have impressed with a resilience that is now realised in their strong results. I have no doubt that the results will be valued by universities and employers, which is borne out by the number of students going to their first choice of university. The same also applies to our Level 3 vocational results such as our BTECs and UAL qualifications, which are also seeing large numbers of students progressing to Higher Education. Our strength in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subjects continues, which is a further boost for the College’s developing West London Institute of Technology, which provides tremendous opportunities for students interested in progressing to employer linked, Higher Technical Qualifications, as an alternative to a degree.”

Jo Withers, Principal of Harrow College, said: “As incoming Principal of Harrow College, it’s a tremendous privilege to see how well our A Level students have done, even with the pandemic to contend with, and a pleasure to see how many of them are going on to Higher Education and other opportunities.

“Whilst teaching and learning is absolutely at the heart of our successes, we are also really proud of the fantastic new facilities we have been able to build over the last few years, which will continue to support our students going forward.”
Students can take confidence in the validity of their results as the college has applied the range of quality assurance approaches, including the use of exam board materials for key assessments, taken under exam conditions and a rigorous standardisation against awarding body mark schemes."

betly priory project

Harrow College Early Years students were asked to design activities and resources for Bently Priory Museum in Stanmore, as part of a project linked to a new exhibit based on the WW2 RAF Bently Priory underground bunker.

The students worked together in three groups to create a shelter building activity and a survival kit activity, inspired by the bunker. Each group created a prototype which underwent testing over the summer break and the museum has used the feedback from visitors to create activity resources for young children and families from all the students ideas.

The museum had actually approached the Harrow College Childcare department back in November 2019, to see if they would be interested in involving early years students. The museum had recieved funding for the WW2 bunker project from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and were keen to engage with the local community. Due to the multiple periods of lockdown experienced over the past two years, the students and museum worked together, persevering in spite of the restrictions experienced and executed the project with great success.

The Harrow College Childcare department have recieved £600 for their contribution the project! Check it out here: www.bentleypriorymuseum.org.uk/bentley-priory-bunker/

The safety and wellbeing of the students and staff at Harrow College is of utmost importance. Although many restrictions have been fully lifted, Covid-19 is still with us and we urge all our students and staff to do their bit to stop the spread, stay safe and protect themselves and others.

So please remember to:

  • Wear face coverings in crowded spaces, if you can
  • Test twice a week, even if you have no symptoms – kits are available at College
  • The government is now offering vaccines for all those 16+ years of age. Please take it, it’s the best way to protect yourself and others.

Let’s do our bit to keep life moving so we can enjoy the things we love.
