business expo 1Osman Peermamode, Director of Data and Analytics at Vodaphone, with level 2 students.

On Wednesday 24th November the Business Studies Department at Harrow had their very own Expo! Expos provide students with the opportunity to share their knowledge and insight with the wider community within the college as well as with guests, and the Business Studies students were more than enthusiastic to do so!

expo 2Nikkiben Patel and Alaa Ahmed presenting their chocolate bar. Both the Level 1 and Level 2 students were presenting coursework on how they would analyse, develop and market their own chocolate bar. They had created their own logos, wrappers and some had even created their own adverts! Osman Peermamode, Director of Data and Analytics at Vodaphone, was very impressed with the work that he saw that day, and complimented students on their hard work.

The Level 3 Students presented coursework based on their analysis of Harrow College’s social media presence. They provide great insight and some wonderful tips on what would appeal to students in their age group, looking to apply to college.

The L3 Extended Diploma Architecture, Interior and Product Design, Year 2 students were kindly allowed to decorate the studios of Juttla Architect's this Christmas. If you are around Ruislip High Street please have a look at them. The students were given the task to design festive decorative lights which had to be focused around the theme of architecture. Students also researched the history of the Juttla practice and incorporated some of these elements into their designs.

The Year 1 Architecture, Interior and Product Design students held a festive winter fayre on Wednesday 15th of December at St Annes Shopping Centre in Harrow town centre. The students were there to promote and sell their very own Festive Lights that they had designed and made as part of their course, using CAD software. Students did this in order to raise funds, and to use the proceeds from the sales to arrange for all Year 1 students to enjoy a guided educational tour of architecturally important buildings and structures around London.

The Fayre was a great success and all of the lamps displayed were sold by the end of the day! A fantastic effort from all the students that contributed their art to the cause, and also from the students and tutors that manned the stall on the day!

Last month the Level 1 and 3 Hairdressing students at Harrow College took part in an initiative to organise fundraising activities in support of Safe and Sound Dorset; a charity that supports women who are vulnerably housed to access stable accommodation. The charity offers advice for housing, education and employment, 1-1 mentoring and specialist help for things like welfare.

The hairdressing students offered a wash, cut and blow dry to students, tutors, and the public alike, in exchange for a donation towards the charity. They also baked and sold delicious homemade treats as well as stocking fillers, teas and coffees.

As a result of their fantastic efforts, the hairdressing students have raised a massive £235.31 for Safe and Sound Dorset. These funds will be used towards the charity’s 2022 challenge of raising 22k to assist with offering free creative community sessions to women and girls, who are isolated or at risk in and around Bournemouth.

Well done!

Kaled Yactine

Delighted to announce that our IT Entry 3 student, Kaled Yactine, has been awarded the Jack Petchey Award!

Kaled was nominated by his tutor because of his amazing progress on his course, his support of other students in the classroom and for how well he has settled into his new life in the UK, from Lebanon.

As part of his award, Kaled has won £250 for himself and his classmates to put towards a trip to the London Aquarium and a trip on a Thames River cruise later this year.

Well done, Kaled! We're all very proud of you.

IT apprentices visit Harrow College

Mr Sanjay Shah and his three apprentices, Callum O’Day, Leena Mahmoud and Tyler Lewis visited the ICT department at Harrow-on-the-Hill site on 8 March 2022. Mr Said Shittu briefed them about the ICT infrastructure of the Harrow-on-the-Hill campus. The team then visited our Level-3 classes, the main goal was to motivate them and provide in site information for joining the apprenticeship route.

Mr Sanjay compared studying at University which can be costly, a degree will cost £10k per year in tuition fees, plus additional living expenses. Learners will undoubtedly leave university with student debt without any job guarantee. Apprenticeships, on the other hand, appeal to those looking for alternatives to university as they take a more practical approach to learning. The focus is on training for a specific career and learning and developing skills by doing the job.

"You'll gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to apply your skills immediately and more importantly, you will get paid from day one.”

Callum O’Day, Leena Mahmoud and Tyler Lewis also shared their apprenticeship experience and day to day routine. This generated a lot of enthusiasm and our learners expressed their interest to pursue the apprenticeship route after their Level 3.

At the end of the day, Ms Rida Butt invited a guest speaker, Ms Jackie Slattery from Computer Stone, who provided information about recycling ICT equipment.

In the Spring term, Level 2 Business students banded together to fundraise for Ukrainians in crisis. Setting up shop in the reception area of the enterprise building, they offered sweets and treats, baked goods and other confectionary for their fellow students to purchase, with all of the profit being donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

In the end the L2 students raised £127.43 in just two hours! Thank you to all that supported and attended the spring market event. Harrow College is very proud of our students and their commendable activism.

As co-founder of the Anime and Manga Club, Vishalini has promoted this club within the college grounds and most recently at the student fayre in March, where she was able to recruit many new members. The Anime and Manga club has allowed students to express their passion and curiosity for Japanese production and it has been a great contribution to student life at college. In the future, Vishalini hopes to plan club trips that relate to Anime & Manga in London, and to grow the club next year with new members.

ESOL Fundraising Event 1

Harrow College is a wonderful melting pot of diversity. We have students that have come to us from across the globe. With that being said, many of our students have come from countries that are suffering ongoing difficulties. Students of the ESOL department decided to put together a fundraiser to show support and solidarity with nations across the world that are experiencing crises.

The fundraiser was a remarkable event! There were home-made baked goods as well as snacks and cultural delicacies that one could purchase. There were also henna artists and tuck shop goodies available. In total, the team effort amounted to a whopping £726.82 which will be donated to the Red Cross!

Students cleaned up the Lowlands Park area next to Harrow on the Hill Campus and the green hill opposite the college. Their teachers Dahir Hoddoon and Andra Metsaluik were keen for their students to take part in a volunteering activity and show that they care for the local environment. All the students enjoyed the opportunity to do something really good for the local community.

In March, Belinda Asafo-Agyei from Bels Beauty Complex visited Level 3 students at Harrow College to provide specialist insight on Afro hair.

Belinda discussed the different approaches to and frequency in washing afro hair, and what products can and cannot be used on the scalp from a trichologist's point of view - everyone's scalp and hair is different and so no one range suits all. She also talked about a variety of scalp conditions and disorders and how a trichologist differs from a dermatologist.

Belinda also went into detail about what working in the industry is like and how best to navigate dealing with difficult situations or with clients that don't take on her professional recommendations. The Level 3 students were very interested in learning more about trichology and found the training session to be very insightful.
